A circuit breaker is an electrical safety switch that monitors the flow of electricity from your breaker box to a specific appliance (e.g., an air conditioner) or a particular area of your home (e.g., your living room). When it detects an electrical fault (e.g., a power surge), it trips, causing its contacts to separate and stop the flow of electricity through the circuit.

In this article, we draw from Infiway’s more than 17 years’ experience providing maintenance services in Dubai, including expert electrical services from licensed electricians, to discuss why circuit breakers trip, what a tripped circuit breaker looks like, how to reset a circuit breaker, and how to prevent it from happening again.

أهم النتائج

  • Circuit breakers trip to stop the flow of electricity and protect your electrical systems and appliances from overloads, short circuits, and electrical faults.
  • Always disconnect all lights and appliances from a tripped circuit before manually resetting the breaker switch.
  • If a breaker trips repeatedly or you notice burning smells, sparks, or scorch marks, contact a licensed electrician instead of attempting to reset the circuit breaker yourself.

What Causes a Circuit Breaker to Trip?

There are three primary reasons for a tripped circuit breaker: overloads, short circuits, and faults. A circuit breaker trips in these instances to protect a circuit (and connected appliances) from permanent damage and to prevent fire and other hazards.

Overload

When the circuit has to carry more electrical load than it has been designed for (i.e., the electrical demand surpasses the circuit’s capacity), the wires and components overheat. An example is if you draw 30 amperes of electrical current on a 20-ampere circuit because you have an octopus connection and are using too many appliances at the same time.

If a circuit overloads, the protective plastic coating on wires could melt and expose electrical wires. The heat can also burn sensitive electronic parts on appliances.

Short Circuit

A short circuit pertains to electrical current taking a shortcut along an unintended path because two wires carrying different voltages touch each other (e.g., a live wire touching a neutral wire).

Since the shortcut path is not supposed to exist, it has no (or minimal) built-in resistance. Put another way, in a short circuit, the electricity bypasses the circuit with built-in resistance, for one with little to no resistance.

The lack of sufficient resistance means a powerful surge of current that generates intense heat capable of melting insulation, circuit components, and sensitive electrical parts in appliances.

Fault

There are several types of faults. A short circuit is actually a type of electrical fault. Other types of faults include:

  • Ground fault: This works like a short circuit, except it is the result of a live wire touching an exposed ground wire or a metal box connected to such a ground wire.
  • Arc fault: This type of fault happens when loose wiring causes electricity to be discharged into the air or to arc through an air gap. You’ll see sparks when this happens.
  • Balanced fault: Also known as a symmetrical or a three-phase fault, it happens when all three phases of a power system short-circuit simultaneously or come in contact with one another.
  • Unbalanced fault: Also known as an unsymmetrical fault, it happens when one or two phases of a three-phase power system short-circuit while the remaining phase or phases function normally, causing an unbalanced current distribution and voltage drops.

How to Identify a Tripped Circuit Breaker

An electrical outlet suddenly losing power can indicate a tripped circuit breaker. To verify this, open your electrical panel board, find the switch for the circuit that lost power (e.g., the switch for the circuit dedicated to your air conditioner if it’s the air conditioner that lost power), and check its state.

If the switch is in the middle or neutral position, halfway between ON and OFF, then you can safely conclude the circuit breaker has tripped.

ملاحظة: There are circuit breakers that are designed to snap the switch all the way to the OFF position instead of snapping it to the halfway position. The Type CH circuit breaker from Eaton is an example of such a circuit breaker.

How to Reset a Circuit Breaker That Has Tripped

A tripped circuit breaker won’t reset automatically. It requires manual intervention. Here are the steps you need to follow to reset a circuit breaker safely:

  1. Switch off all the light switches and unplug all the appliances connected to the tripped circuit breaker. This will prevent any surge of current from getting through and potentially overloading the system again.
  2. On the electrical panel board, which typically contains all the circuit breakers in your house, find the tripped circuit breaker (the circuit breaker whose switch is flipped halfway between ON and OFF).
  3. Push the tripped circuit breaker’s switch all the way to the OFF position. For your safety, make sure your hands are dry before you do this.
  4. Pull the switch all the way down to the ON position. This will restore the power to the circuit.
  5. Turn on one of the light switches in the room or area that lost power to see if electricity has been restored.
  6. Reconnect only the electrical appliances you need; do not overload.

Is There an Automatic-Reset Circuit Breaker for Home Use?

Circuit breakers for the home, those designed to go in electrical panel boards, are manual-reset breakers only. This forces homeowners to check the breaker and assess if they need to call an electrician for professional help. It also prevents continuous tripping that can damage appliances and electrical connections.

Do auto-reset circuit breakers exist? Yes, they do, but they’re for low-voltage, specialized environments and applications (e.g., recreational vehicles, boats, solar power setups, and individual appliances that can do with an extra layer of protection).

They have metal plates that disengage when the breaker gets too hot from a surge, disrupting electrical flow. When the metal plates cool down, they reconnect, thereby restoring the electrical current.

Troubleshooting: If a Tripped Circuit Breaker Won’t Reset

What do you do if the circuit breaker won’t flip back on? You have flipped the breaker switch to the OFF position and then to the ON position. You have reconnected the appliances connected to that circuit, but immediately or soon after, the circuit breaker tripped again.

How can a circuit breaker be reset if it keeps tripping?

If a breaker trips immediately or shortly after a thermal circuit breaker reset, repeat the steps in the previous section to reset the circuit breaker. This time, however, do not reconnect all appliances.

Verify how much current the circuit can support, then make sure to keep your electrical load within that limit by reducing the number of appliances connected to that circuit at the same time.

For precision, check every appliance’s amperage and make sure the total amperage of the appliances that are running simultaneously on the circuit, lights included, is below (around 80%) capacity.

When to Call an Electrician for a Tripped Breaker

The following are other instances when a tripped circuit breaker should trigger an electrical callout:

  • The smell of burning plastic
  • Scorch marks on electrical outlets or the circuit breaker
  • Arcs and sparks
  • Outlets or a circuit breaker that’s hot to the touch
  • Frequent tripping

How to Prevent Your Circuit Breaker From Tripping

To stop your home’s circuit breakers from tripping, you need to prevent overloads, short circuits, and electrical faults.

Therefore, make sure to keep electrical demand below a circuit’s capacity. Avoid octopus connections, and plug in an appliance only after making sure it won’t put you over that area’s circuit load or capacity.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How to properly reset a tripped breaker?

First, switch off all lights and unplug appliances connected to the affected circuit to prevent another surge. Locate the tripped breaker on your panel board; this breaker has its switch resting halfway between ON and OFF. With dry hands, push it fully to OFF, then flip it all the way to ON to restore power to the circuit.

Should you immediately reset a tripped breaker?

No, you should not immediately reset a tripped breaker. First, unplug all appliances and turn off all the lights that rely on the tripped circuit. Only then should you reset the breaker. Resetting while devices are still drawing power risks another immediate trip.

Is it safe to flip a tripped breaker back on?

Yes, it is safe to flip a tripped breaker back on. Just ensure your hands are dry before touching the switch, and disconnect appliances first to prevent overload. Push the switch fully to OFF, then to ON. If it trips again immediately, or you notice burning smells, scorch marks, or sparks, stop and call a licensed electrician instead.

Do I need to unplug everything to reset a breaker?

Yes, you need to unplug everything on a circuit to reset its breaker. Switch off all the lights and unplug every appliance connected to the tripped circuit to prevent a surge of current from tripping the breaker again upon reset. Once the breaker is reset and power is confirmed, you can reconnect appliances one at a time.

Should I be worried if my breaker tripped?

A single trip usually isn’t alarming. It may just be the system protecting your home from an overload or a short circuit. Of course, before you reset the circuit breaker, you need to reduce the circuit’s connections to prevent the breaker from tripping again.

However, treat it seriously if a breaker trips repeatedly, or if you notice burning plastic smells, scorch marks, sparks, or a hot outlet or breaker. These signs warrant calling an electrician right away.

How to Reset the Circuit Breaker After It Trips

Circuit breakers trip when a circuit is overloaded, has short-circuited, or has an electrical fault. It does that to protect the circuit’s wires, components, and connected appliances from damage.

Resetting a tripped circuit breaker is easy. You just need to turn the breaker switch on again. However, if the circuit breaker trips immediately or shortly after a reset, trips too frequently, or is accompanied by other signs, such as sparks or arcs, the smell of burning plastic, and scorch marks on the board and outlets, get professional help.

If you need help with a tripped circuit breaker, call Infiway. Better yet, get an AMC for regular preventive maintenance checkups for your home, including your electrical system.
